The best part is most of the ways to add more joy and happiness are free and easy to do. And a bonus is that when you are happier, you pass that on to your family, friends, and others that you interact with – it is contagious (in a good way :)).
1. Spend Time with Family and Friends
One way to find joy in life is to spend time with family and friends. Socializing with loved ones can always put a smile on your face as you laugh together, enjoy each other’s company, and share stories of the day. Spending quality time also has many health benefits such as helping reduce stress levels and helps relieve symptoms of depression.
Be selective if you can, don’t call your friend Betty who just wants to do a bitch session with you – she will not be the one who will boost your spirits.
The best times are those you can share together, like going on vacation or exploring the world around you – even if it’s just taking a walk-through nature after dinner. Plus, when sharing experiences, this creates stronger bonds between friends and family – what could be better than that?
2. Give to Others
Giving of yourself to others can also find you joy in life. Not only does it make the other person happy, but when you give selflessly without expecting anything back in return, this is a gift for yourself as well!
This will help increase your self-worth, find you joy and make your life much more meaningful.
When giving to others, choose someone who is in need or would greatly appreciate the gift. This could be a child that lives nearby – especially if they are less fortunate than yourself.
Or it could be an animal shelter where you volunteer once a month by walking the dogs or playing with the cats.
It can really be anything that makes you feel good and helps find happiness in your life, even if it’s just a smile from someone who greatly appreciates what you did for them.
3. Find Joy in Life by Being Active
Another way to find joy in life is through exercise! Whether it is going on a run or a walk around your neighborhood, joining an aerobics class, or doing yoga at home – getting active will make you happier overall.
When we find our bodies moving and engaged in motion (even during simple tasks like cleaning), this can help boost endorphins which leave us feeling positive emotions such as euphoria and well-being.
If you get a chance to get outside in nature, this will give an additional boost to your endorphins! To get more out of it, try taking this opportunity to practice mindfulness while you’re walking – be present with each step that you take. Try not to think about what’s next on your agenda or if there is something else that needs doing! This will help free yourself from stressors (at least temporarily). Get out in the sunshine – extra boost of endorphins! Get out near a lake or an ocean – boost! Walking in a forest – you got it BOOST!
So put on some tunes when you are out and about to enjoy the beat and find happiness.
4. Do Something Fun for Yourself Every Day
It is important to find joy in life by doing something fun every day! Whether it’s watching your favorite reality TV show or baking, you should do something that makes you smile inside.
Remember what it was like to play as a child? You can find a little bit of that pure joy back in your life by playing! Make sure to find time for spontaneity and adventure. Say yes to things you have been saying no to, even if it’s just one thing. You will find yourself so much happier when you take the risk and say “yes”.
And even if this means taking a nap when all else fails – take the time out of your busy schedule to find something that brings on feelings of happiness, then go ahead and rest up (and dream about happy things). You deserve it!
5. Self Care is Key
It can be difficult finding balance between work and self care but sometimes we need to put ourselves first. This doesn’t mean neglecting responsibilities; rather, practicing self care will help us become more productive.
Take some time out each day for self-care! There are simple ways to find joy in everyday life so you can enjoy every moment more fully – from making sure there is food on hand when hunger strikes, getting enough sleep, saying ‘no’ when needed. It can be as simple as taking a bath or reading your favorite book – whatever makes you feel good inside and out should come first in your life!

This will help bring mindfulness into moments of your day that are usually rushed and not noticed by us at all, and you will have even more to be grateful for!
8. Make Your Home More Joyful
Make where you live a pleasure to be in and come home to. It can be something small that will spark joy – maybe a new houseplant, picture, or a warm cozy throw for the sofa. You can also try making your home a haven for good smells by lighting scented candles every day or growing beautiful flowers to add color to any room! One of my favorite ways I find joy is through creative outlets like painting, drawing, or writing – anything really where I get lost in creating something new and fresh. If it’s not already there find some sort of creative outlet for yourself because when we express ourselves creatively, we become more open-minded and feel better about life overall. It’s hard to be stressed out if you’re focusing on how pretty your hands look while a paintbrush (true story).
If you can’t draw, try an adult coloring book – they come with so many themes – you are sure to find something that appeals to you. Get crafty and find your joy.
10. Listen to Your Favorite Music
Listening to your favorite music can have a huge impact on your mood. It is scientifically proven that listening to the right type of music can inspire you and lift your spirit, reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure and enhance mood. So, find some time every day, put on those headphones, close off from the world around you and just listen to whatever makes you feel good! This will instantly transport you into a better state of mind.
Not only does it boost productivity by making you more energetic but also assists with relaxation which will ultimately lead a better night’s sleep as well. So next time life gets too hectic at work or home just turn up some tunes from artists like Adele–you know they’ll make everything seem less complicated. Make a playlist on Spotify of your favorite songs so you can get that boost when you need it.
11. Put the Phone Down
When was the last time you disconnected from your technology? You might not be able to tell, but I bet it wasn’t this morning when we woke up. Maybe instead of scrolling through Facebook and emailing people back-and forth all day long with just a few minutes left over for lunch or dinner (or maybe even taking care of yourself), what if we spent those moments connecting more deeply with others in our lives–spending quality one on one sharing memories.
Imagine how much more productive we could be if instead of being on our phones all the time, we were truly present with what’s going on around us. If you find yourself constantly distracted by your phone when spending time with friends and family think about not checking it at dinner or even putting in away while watching a movie together–you’ll find that quality time becomes so much more valuable than anything else you can do!
